Arsenic Testing Results

The chart below shows the means over the eight years of testing our rice compared to the maximum levels (ML) set by CODEX and EFSA. The mean inorganic arsenic (iAs) contents of rice for each year are less than half of the CODEX standard for ML 0.20 ppm of iAs in white rice. Only the 2011 year includes white rice testing; the remaining seven years have been brown rice testing only.  The EFSA standard ML for brown rice is 0.25 ppm.

The 8-year average was 0.09 ppm, with a range of 0.01 – 0.24 ppm. As farming practices were similar between the eight crop years, variability across these years may be attributed to differences in weather patterns and the volume of different varieties grown in each year.

The tables below represent inorganic arsenic (iAs) content in different types of rice for the 2011 – 2018 crop years:

The 2019 crop harvest (planting starts Spring 2019) will be our 9th consecutive year of continued testing as part of our ongoing arsenic monitoring program.

Our Table Rice and Rice Cakes
In order to provide our consumers with information directly associated with the products they love, we will begin reporting estimated annual iAs levels for our top selling table rice products toward the end of the year. This will include your favorite products such as Lundberg Family Farms Organic Brown Short Grain, Lundberg Family Farms Organic White Basmati and our newest line of Sprouted rice products.  In addition to monitoring our rice supply, we have evaluated several of our manufacturing processes and finished goods, including rice cakes. Our historical testing shows that the iAs levels in our Unsalted and Lightly Salted Rice cakes reflect our rice cake recipe and the levels tested in our paddy rice. In the months ahead we will begin to report calculated levels for our top rice cake SKUs.

We remain committed to invest time and resources in this testing plan to provide you with meaningful data. We will continue to collect and analyze samples across our product lines and from multiple crop years to ensure the reliability of our data. When it comes to understanding our products, we want to be sure. At Lundberg Family Farms, your health and safety is our primary concern. We are committed to enabling you and your family to make healthy and informed decisions about your food.
